Caitlin Kalinowski, head of robotics and consumer hardware at OpenAI, announced her resignation on Saturday, citing \u200bconcerns about the company\u2019s agreement with the Department \u200cof Defense.<\/strong><\/p>\n In a social media post on X, Kalinowski wrote that OpenAI did not take enough time before agreeing to deploy its AI models \u200bon the Pentagon\u2019s classified cloud networks.<\/p>\n \u201cAI has an \u200bimportant role in national security,\u201d Kalinowski posted. \u201cBut surveillance of \u2060Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human \u200bauthorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got.\u201d<\/p>\n Reuters \u200bcould not immediately reach Kalinowski for comment, but she wrote on X that while she has \u201cdeep respect\u201d for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and \u200bthe team, the company announced the Pentagon deal \u201cwithout the \u200bguardrails defined,\u201d she posted.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a governance concern first and foremost,\u201d Kalinowski wrote \u200cin \u2060a subsequent X post. \u201cThese are too important for deals or announcements to be rushed.\u201d<\/p>\n OpenAI said the day after the deal was struck that it includes additional safeguards to protect its \u200buse cases. \u200bThe company on \u2060Saturday reiterated that its \u201cred lines\u201d preclude use of its technology in domestic surveillance or autonomous \u200bweapons.<\/p>\n \u201cWe recognize that people have strong views \u200babout these \u2060issues and we will continue to engage in discussion with employees, government, civil society and communities around the world,\u201d the \u2060company \u200bsaid in a statement to Reuters.<\/p>\n Kalinowski \u200bjoined OpenAI in 2024 after leading augmented reality hardware development at Meta Platforms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
