The top US Senate Democrat on military affairs said Monday President Donald Trump\u2019s order to scale back drills with ally South Korea was \u201cinane\u201d and \u201chaphazard.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump said he ordered the Pentagon to downsize \u201cinappropriate and hostile\u201d drills, hours before the exercises were due to begin on Monday, citing his \u201cgood relationship\u201d with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.<\/p>\n

In a post Sunday on Truth Social, Trump also cited South Korea\u2019s refusal to join the US in the \u201cdenuclearization\u201d of Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is another inane, haphazard decision by President Trump and his chaotic administration,\u201d Senate Armed Services Committee ranking member Jack Reed said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen President Trump cuts military exercises to flatter a dictator or punishes South Korea for declining to join a war he started, all of our allies \u2014 and adversaries \u2014 think that America\u2019s commitments are negotiable.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called the decision a \u201cpropaganda victory\u201d for North Korea\u2019s Kim and punishment \u201cfor no reason beyond Trump\u2019s ego\u201d for South Korea.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina and Russia are watching how easily this president abandons America\u2019s allies, and they will remember it the next time they test us,\u201d Reed said.<\/p>\n

Washington and Seoul have been conducting joint military exercises together since the 1950s as a deterrence to what Reed called North Korean aggression, and as a signal of strength to other potential adversaries.<\/p>\n

Reed said Trump\u2019s post contradicted a recent warning from NORTHCOM Deputy Commander Lt. Gen. Joseph Jarrard, that Pyongyang had successfully flight-tested intercontinental ballistic missiles with \u201cenough boost to deliver a nuclear payload anywhere in North America.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Korea has not responded to Trump\u2019s order, though it has previously voiced anger at the regular joint maneuvers, which take place in South Korea.<\/p>\n

The drills began as American allies in East Asia fret over North Korean displays of weapons capabilities and its growing alignment with Russia as well as traditional backer China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
