{"id":66361,"date":"2026-08-23T11:16:27","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T11:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/66361"},"modified":"2026-08-23T11:16:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T11:16:34","slug":"drownings-surge-past-300-in-france-amid-heatwaves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/66361","title":{"rendered":"Drownings surge past 300 in France amid heatwaves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size:16px;line-height:1.6\">\n<p><strong>PARIS: France has recorded more than 300 drownings this summer, up sharply from last year, a minister said Sunday, linking the surge to the heatwaves that have swept Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 301 drownings since June 19 are an increase of 14 percent from the summer of 2025, Sports and Youth Minister Marina Ferrari told France Inter radio.<\/p>\n<p>She called it a \u201csad toll\u201d, saying the increase was \u201cin line with the repeated heatwaves\u201d that have hit many European countries \u2014 a phenomenon experts say is driven by human-caused climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLots of people have sought to hit the water, with risky behaviour,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany deadly accidents have occurred in areas that are not authorised or supervised for swimming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On July 15, Ferrari gave an initial summer drownings toll of 142 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Much of Europe is bracing for repeated heatwaves and periods of scorching temperatures that have driven rivers to record lows, ignited historic forest fires and contributed to thousands of deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The national weather agency Meteo-France earlier warned that the southeast would see temperatures as high as 35C, spreading further across the country as the week progresses.<\/p>\n<p>The agency also warned that due to climate change, \u201cfuture summers will generally be hotter than those experienced to date\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Both France and the UK have seen thousands of excess deaths during previous heatwaves this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/arynews.tv\/drownings-surge-past-300-france-amid-heatwaves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS: France has recorded more than 300 drownings this summer, up sharply from last year, a minister said Sunday, linking the surge to the heatwaves that have swept Europe.
