WASHINGTON: Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Friday sought a federal probe into airport \u200cfacilities for ritual washing before Islamic prayers, a move that a Muslim advocacy group called an \u201canti-Muslim political stunt.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a letter to the Department of Justice, Abbott called on the department to immediately review the ablution facilities \u200bat Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport, casting them as discriminatory.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause \u200bthe airports receive federal funds, they are subject to numerous conditions attached \u2060to that funding \u2013 including the requirement to comply with all applicable laws prohibiting discrimination,\u201d Abbott\u2019s \u200boffice said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Many Muslims wash their faces, arms and legs before daily prayers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are \u200bnot \u2018Muslim-only\u2019 spaces any more than a nursing room or an interfaith prayer room is \u2018Christian-only\u2019 or \u2018mothers-only,’\u201d said the Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, an advocacy group.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are accommodations, open to any traveler, that happen \u200bto be used mostly by the Muslim community. That is not discrimination. That is what \u200baccessible public infrastructure looks like,\u201d CAIR-Texas said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Last week, Abbott referred the airports to U.S. \u200cTransportation Secretary \u2060Sean Duffy for investigation and threatened to revoke state funding.<\/p>\n

Following that referral, Abbott said, DFW abandoned its plans to install more ablution facilities. The airport said this week that officials had \u201cdetermined the originally anticipated benefit may not be achieved\u201d if the stations were built.<\/p>\n

There are about 4.5 \u200bmillion Muslims in the \u200bU.S., including more \u2060than 300,000 in Texas, the World Population Review says.<\/p>\n

U.S. rights advocates say Islamophobia has risen since the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York \u200band the Pentagon, and more recently because of anti-immigration policies, white supremacy and \u200bthe fallout \u2060of Israel\u2019s war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Rights advocates have also documented a spike in anti-Muslim messaging and rhetoric in U.S. political campaigns as Muslim American politicians have risen to prominent offices and roles.<\/p>\n

Republican governors in Florida \u2060and Texas \u200bhave cast CAIR, which has opposed Republican President Donald Trump\u2019s crackdown \u200bon immigration and pro-Palestinian protests, as a terrorist group.<\/p>\n

CAIR and other civil rights groups have denounced the claims and said Republicans \u200bhave attempted to stoke fear against Muslims.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
