{"id":67880,"date":"2026-08-26T22:55:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/67880"},"modified":"2026-08-26T22:55:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:55:42","slug":"japan-to-diversify-crude-supplies-back-pipelines-that-bypass-hormuz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/67880","title":{"rendered":"Japan to diversify crude supplies, back pipelines that bypass Hormuz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size:16px;line-height:1.6\">\n<p><strong>TOKYO: Japan unveiled a comprehensive plan on Wednesday to strengthen the resilience of its energy supply, including support \u200bfor pipeline projects that bypass the Strait of Hormuz, the gateway \u200cto almost all of its imported crude before the Iran war.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>The plan was outlined at a meeting of the government\u2019s Green Transformation (GX) Implementation Council and specific measures, including legislative \u200bsteps, are expected to be finalised by the end of the \u200byear.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ordered the package to bolster Japan\u2019s \u2060energy resilience after the start of the Iran war and the effective closure of the \u200bstrait highlighted the country\u2019s heavy reliance on Middle Eastern crude.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Middle East imports accounted \u200bfor 94% of Japan\u2019s crude oil in 2025, with 93% coming via the strait. No target was set for reducing dependence on Middle Eastern crude oil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Japan will cooperate with \u200bMiddle Eastern oil-producing countries on pipeline projects to bypass the strait by \u200bproviding financial support through the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>To diversify crude \u200cprocurement, the \u2060government plans to introduce a levy-funded scheme under which refiners and traders would share the additional transportation costs of importing alternative supplies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>It plans to establish a reinsurance scheme for shippers in case overseas reinsurance becomes unavailable in \u200border to ensure \u200bstable operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The plan \u2060aims to build national naphtha reserves in the form of crude oil after shortages of the petrochemical feedstock, used in \u200bplastics and printing inks, caused disruptio<\/span><span>ns<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>The plan also features measures to expand cleaner \u200benergy \u2060sources such as nuclear power and renewables.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Japan, which spends over 20 trillion yen ($125.8 billion) annually on fossil fuel imports, aims to improve energy self-sufficiency by replacing 2\u20135 nuclear reactors in the 2040s and 11\u201314 in the 2050s, while building domestic supply chains for perovskite solar cells, next-generation geothermal power, and offshore wind power.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/arynews.tv\/japan-to-diversify-crude-supplies-back-pipelines-that-bypass-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TOKYO: Japan unveiled a comprehensive plan on Wednesday to strengthen the resilience of its energy supply, including support \u200bfor pipeline projects that bypass the Strait of Hormuz, the gateway \u200cto almost all of its imported crude before the Iran war.
