OpenAI said on Friday \u200cthat it plans to stop providing AI models to Cursor, the coding-tool company now owned by Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX, marking a further escalation in the bitter rivalry between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Musk.<\/strong><\/p>\n Musk and Altman have been at odds for years, \u200ba feud that culminated earlier this year in a trial over Musk\u2019s $150 billion lawsuit against OpenAI. \u200bDuring the trial, Musk\u2019s lawyer said that Musk and other witnesses had testified that Altman \u2060was a liar, while OpenAI argued that Musk had sought control of the company.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe are making this choice \u200bbecause we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our \u200bexperience with Elon Musk\u2019s companies violating contracts,\u201d OpenAI said in a blog post.<\/span><\/p>\n Musk responded early on Saturday in an X post, writing, \u201cI couldn\u2019t care less.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n He accused Altman and OpenAI President Greg Brockman of being \u201cuntrustworthy,\u201d while repeating his assertion that they \u201cstole an open \u200bsource nonprofit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Musk, the world\u2019s richest person, had sued OpenAI and Altman for \u201cstealing a charity\u201d by betraying the company\u2019s \u200boriginal nonprofit mission for their own enrichment. A federal jury ruled against Musk earlier this year, finding that he had filed \u200cthe \u2060case too late.<\/span><\/p>\n However, Michael Truell, a co-founder of Cursor and now an executive at SpaceX, said on X that the company was speaking with the OpenAI team to resolve this issue.<\/span><\/p>\n Hours after OpenAI\u2019s announcement, Anthropic, which rivals both firms but has an ongoing partnership with SpaceX, said it planned to increase compute to support Claude models in \u200bCursor, according to Tom Brown, \u200bone of the co-founders \u2060of the firm.<\/span><\/p>\n In its blog post, OpenAI said that X, formerly known as Twitter and now part of SpaceX, had breached the terms of its contract with OpenAI \u200bafter Musk acquired the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cTo work with a large partner like SpaceX, we \u200btypically rely on \u2060custom contracts to ensure compliance with our terms of service and that the integration provides for safety at scale,\u201d the AI company added.<\/span><\/p>\n The ChatGPT-maker said it proposed a shutoff date of November 12, 2026, adding that its agreement \u2060with Cursor \u200bgave it a limited time window to cancel the contract following \u201ca \u200bchange of control.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
