The company announced this on Thursday, calling it a major move to make advanced AI tools easier for researchers to access.

The company is also expanding its AI for Science credit program. Now, researchers across many fields that rely on computing power—not only in the biological sciences—can receive support.

Scientists can now access standard Claude Team seats at no cost, while those needing higher usage limits can opt for premium seats at $15 per month, with the price locked in for a year. Anthropic says it expects to expand the program further in the months ahead, beyond the first 10,000 seats.

Only principal investigators or similar leaders at accredited academic or nonprofit research institutions are eligible. Once verified, these leaders can invite their lab members to join the plan.

For-profit companies and industry research teams are not eligible for these offers and must continue with standard commercial plans. Accounts that remain inactive for 90 days may lose their special pricing. Anthropic additionally emphasizes that users’ conversations, files, and research data are not used to train its AI models.

In addition to the new subscriptions, Anthropic is expanding its AI for Science credit program, first launched in 2025. The program, once centered on biological sciences, will now provide credits to researchers working in mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering.

Researchers who need more resources than their team seats allow can apply for up to $50,000 in credits for each project. Anthropic points to recent achievements, including advances in understanding the Riemann zeta function and new developments in protein design, as examples of the kind of work it hopes to encourage.

Even with broader access, rules remain strict for life sciences. Biology and chemistry researchers can only use Opus-class models. Claude Fable models will continue to block professional drug development questions to address biosecurity concerns.

At the same time, Anthropic is working with the U.S. government on a special program that gives life sciences professionals safe access to its Mythos-class models.

This latest expansion follows the June 2026 launch of Claude Science, an AI workbench created to help researchers integrate their tools, verify citations, and manage computing resources more efficiently.

Source link

Anthropic is increasing its support for researchers by providing 10,000 free and discounted Claude Team subscription seats to scientists worldwide.
