MANCHESTER, England \u2013 Bruno Fernandes is normally Manchester United\u2019s creator-in-chief, the player threading passes through impossible gaps and supplying chances for others.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Against Ipswich Town on Sunday, however, the captain decided to finish the job himself.<\/p>\n

Fernandes scored a hat-trick to inspire a 5-2 \u200bthrashing that gave Michael Carrick\u2019s side their first Premier League win of the season after an embarrassing opening-day \u200cdefeat by promoted Hull City, reminding everyone that while he may be one of the league\u2019s elite playmakers, he remains capable of taking games over as a goalscorer too.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe means a lot,\u201d Carrick said. \u201cHe\u2019s been here for a good number of years now. He\u2019s experienced a whole load of different emotions and different \u200bthings.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got a lot of experience now to pass on to others and show them the way a little bit \u200band lead by example and help them in different moments, and times like today, when you\u2019re looking \u2060towards certain players to give us that little bit of something else \u2014 he did that today particularly well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Portugal international\u2019s first goal, \u200bin the 40th minute, hauled United back into the game after Leif Davis had put Ipswich on the scoreboard.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old struck twice more, including \u200bonce from the penalty spot, to complete only his second Premier League hat-trick, his first having also come in United\u2019s opening home match of a season against Leeds United five years ago.<\/p>\n

He very nearly added a fourth with a shot from close to the halfway line that glanced just over the bar. \u200bHe then produced a superb through ball for Bryan Mbeumo to score United\u2019s fifth goal with a lob.<\/p>\n

FLOURISHED UNDER CARRICK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s display was \u200ba continuation of his excellent form from last season, when he flourished under Carrick after Ruben Amorim was sacked in January, thriving with the freedom \u200cto roam \u2060between the lines and dictate matches.<\/p>\n

Fernandes, a big reason for United\u2019s eventual third-place finish, collected an impressive haul of individual honours, including the Premier League Player of the Season award, while also breaking the league record for assists in a campaign.<\/p>\n

Arguing with referees one minute and running back to cover for a teammate the next, his impact extends beyond goals and assists. He combines creativity with his work off \u200bthe ball, pressing aggressively, dropping deep \u200bto collect possession and demanding \u2060high standards from teammates.<\/p>\n

He has grown into the captaincy, evolved into United\u2019s emotional heartbeat, and made himself indispensable to Carrick\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe offers us a lot. What else can I say?\u201d Carrick said, smiling. \u201cSaid quite \u200ba lot about him already, and I\u2019ve only been here six or seven months. Hopefully, there\u2019s a \u200blot to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some \u2060of Sunday\u2019s biggest cheers not involving the skipper came for a couple of Marcus Rashford near-misses in the forward\u2019s first start in more than 600 days after he fell out of favour under Amorim, and then had loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever\u2019s gone on\u2026 it\u2019s always \u2060about what \u200byou do next and what your intentions are,\u201d Carrick said. \u201cHe\u2019s been fantastic since \u200bhe came back, it was great to see him on the pitch today for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

But this was Fernandes\u2019 day. The league\u2019s assist king swapped provider for predator, rescuing United \u200bwhen they needed him most and underlining once again why Carrick\u2019s side still revolves around their captain.<\/p>\n
