NICOSIA: One person died after a boat with around 270 people on board capsized off North Cyprus \u200bon Sunday, Turkish Cypriot media reported.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turkish Cypriot Transport \u200bMinister Erhan Arikli told Anadolu that one passenger had \u2060died when the ferry capsized. He said there were \u200b267 people on board, 259 of whom were passengers and \u200beight of whom were crew.<\/span><\/p>\n

The privately owned ferry left the North Cyprus port of Kyrenia at 12:30 p.m. (0930 GMT) and immediately started \u200btaking on water for an unknown reason, Turkey\u2019s state-run \u200bnews agency Anadolu reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was heading for the Turkish port of Tasucu \u200cin \u2060Mersin province in the eastern Mediterranean.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those rescued from the vessel were taken to Kyrenia port to be transferred to hospitals, he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Murat Senkul, the mayor of Kyrenia, told broadcaster \u200bCNN Turk that \u200b159 passengers \u2060on board the vessel had been reached.<\/span><\/p>\n

Video footage showed people in red life jackets \u200bsitting or standing on top of the overturned \u200bvessel \u2060as authorities scrambled coastguard and private vessels for assistance to bring them to shore.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kibris newspaper reported that the vessel, \u2060which \u200bsome reports said was a catamaran, \u200bbegan taking in water about four miles off the shore.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
