ASHEVILLE: U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday the United \u200bStates is likely to announce sanctions on a bank this week \u200cas part of its economic campaign against Iran.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWe are probably going to announce a bank sanction this week, and we will announce one the week after. We are speaking \u200bto our allies here, who have all come forward, and \u200bwe have had a great show of support,\u201d Bessent said.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking at an \u2060event on the sidelines of the U.S.-hosted Group of 20 finance \u200bleaders in Asheville, North Carolina, the treasury secretary said the U.S. was also \u200blooking at targeting airline leasing companies and other entities that did business with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt could be entities. It could be it could be airline \u200bleasing companies, which we\u2019ll be looking at. It could be anyone who \u200bdoes business with the IRGC. We are tracking down the IRGC\u2019s assets,\u201d Bessent said.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe \u200chave \u2060zero tolerance. We are going to economically asphyxiate this regime.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Bessent told Reuters on Sunday the U.S. Treasury was likely to unveil weekly new secondary sanctions aimed at increasing economic pressure on Iran, with an initial focus on \u200bbanks.<\/span><\/p>\n He said the \u200bnext step may \u2060be cutting off an institution entirely from the dollar-based financial system.<\/span><\/p>\n In a message directed at the IRGC, Bessent said \u200bon Tuesday: \u201cWe know where in the British Virgin Islands \u200byour accounts \u2060are at these trust companies. We know the 100 million dollar houses you have around the world, and we are going to freeze those.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
