Apple has renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America in its Maps app, following Google\u2019s lead, but only after the president got involved. People in the US will see the new name, while Canadians will still see Lake Ontario. Users in other countries will see both names on the map.<\/strong><\/p>\n Trade talks between the US and Canada fell apart last month after Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s office called the US demands unacceptable. In response, President Trump signed an executive order to change the lake\u2019s name. The US also set 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods, and Canada plans to respond with equal counter-tariffs.<\/span><\/p>\n Google quickly updated the name on Google Maps, saying it was following official government sources, specifically the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).<\/span><\/p>\n The company said US users will see the lake as Lake America, while Canadians will see Lake Ontario. People in other countries will see both names.<\/span><\/p>\n Apple took longer to make the change, and reports say the president had to step in to encourage the company. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Trump contacted Apple directly about updating the name in Apple Maps.<\/span><\/p>\n About 52% of the lake\u2019s surface is in Canada, and the rest is in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n This situation is similar to last year, when Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
