KATOWICE, Poland \u2013 FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who attended the opening match of the Under-20 Women\u2019s World Cup in Katowice on Saturday, remained tight-lipped about \u200bwhether he regrets his abandoned proposal to sell a\u00a0stake in the World Cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n The \u200cevent is the first tournament organised by world soccer\u2019s ruling body since the\u00a0Swiss administrator called off the plan, which valued the commercial rights of the World Cup and other FIFA tournaments at $20 billion.<\/p>\n The \u200bproposal was abandoned in late July following a fierce backlash and boycott threats from regional \u200bgoverning bodies, including Europe\u2019s UEFA and major stakeholders in the sport.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m very \u2060happy to be here in beautiful Poland, in Katowice, a fantastic setting for this \u200bUnder-20 FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup. It\u2019s great,\u201d Infantino said at the opening game between hosts \u200bPoland and Argentina.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is what we do, this is about giving opportunities, giving chances to teams with players, talents from all over the world, increasing number of participants.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018NOT TODAY, NOT HERE\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Infantino did not \u200banswer questions about whether he regretted the last six weeks.<\/p>\n \u201cYou know, there will be a \u200blot to say, but there will be a right place and a right time to say this,\u201d \u200che \u2060said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not today, it\u2019s not here. But, here today we are enjoying football.\u201d<\/p>\n On Thursday,\u00a0FIFA accused UEFA\u00a0of launching a smear campaign and argued that its opposition to the selloff was motivated by a desire to preserve European football\u2019s dominance.<\/p>\n Infantino was in Katowice \u200bwith senior members of \u200bFIFA including Secretary General \u2060Mattias Grafstrom and refereeing chief Pierluigi Collina.<\/p>\n UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, who had previously\u00a0ruled out running against Infantino\u00a0in FIFA\u2019s presidential election, \u200bdid not attend the game.<\/p>\n Infantino gave another indication that he \u200bcould fight \u2060next March\u2019s presidential election on the basis that he is best placed to continue to spread wealth to poorer nations.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are continuing at FIFA to work to give every corner of \u2060the \u200bworld a chance, an opportunity for dignity, to find \u200bways and means for them to become better and to participate and to celebrate football,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
