THE HAGUE, Netherlands: Nicaragua Tuesday accused Germany of \u201cmultiple violations of international law\u201d at the United Nations top court, as it pressed its case that Berlin is complicit in genocide in Gaza.<\/strong><\/p>\n The central American country has dragged Germany to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, accusing Berlin of breaching the 1948 UN Genocide Convention with its support, notably arms shipments, for Israel.<\/p>\n \u201cNicaragua invokes Germany\u2019s responsibility in connection to multiple violations of international law, particularly in respect of the odious scourge of genocide and international humanitarian law,\u201d ambassador Carlos Jose Arguello Gomez told the court.<\/p>\n Gomez said Nicaragua\u2019s claims \u201cinvolve the most serious breaches of obligations arising under\u2026 general international law.\u201d<\/p>\n The court \u2014 which rules on legal disputes between countries \u2014 has already thrown out a request by Nicaragua to impose emergency measures on Germany, notably to stop arms exports to Israel.<\/p>\n The case continues however and Germany is now seeking to have it thrown out completely, arguing that judges do not have jurisdiction and that Nicaragua\u2019s case does not hold water.<\/p>\n On Monday, the first of four days of hearings, Germany\u2019s representative Julia Monar noted Germany\u2019s \u201cunwavering support for the existence and security of the State of Israel\u201d but also said it was one of the world\u2019s largest bilateral donors to the Palestinian Territories.<\/p>\n \u201cAll German exports of military technology and equipment to Israel \u2014 as to any country \u2014 are subject to strict licensing requirements which exceed international requirements,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Nicaragua\u2019s statements \u201ccreate an inaccurate and distorted picture,\u201d said Monar.<\/p>\n It takes on average six months for the court to hand down a ruling in such cases.<\/p>\n The court could either side with Germany and throw out the case completely or rule against Berlin, meaning the case would then be considered \u201con the merits\u201d in more detail.<\/p>\n This procedure is separate from a high-profile case also before the ICJ, in which South Africa has accused Israel of perpetrating genocide in Gaza, which Israel denies.<\/p>\n The ICJ\u2019s rulings are binding but it has no power to enforce them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
