KARACHI: Police have finally arrested the main accused, Konain Ali Gohar Shah, in the case involving the alleged brutal assault on the University of Karachi\u2019s Chairman of the Islamic Learning Department, Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi and his nephew, ARY News reported.<\/strong><\/p>\n Police officials said the accused is being shifted to Sachal police station.<\/p>\n The East Police conducted raids at different locations in Karachi to arrest the accused.<\/p>\n According to police, a police team arrested Koneen Shah after chasing him.<\/p>\n Police said the accused was moving from one place to another after switching off his mobile phone.<\/p>\n The police had faced strong criticism over the delay in arresting the main accused. The police were severely reprimanded during a meeting of the Standing Committee, while its chairman had also expressed anger over the accused\u2019s non-arrest.<\/p>\n Earlier, Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi said that he had rejected a compromise offer made by the father of the main accused in the assault case against him.<\/p>\n Ali Gohar Shah, father of the main accused, Kunain Shah, visited Prof Saqi\u2019s residence along with several respected community members and attempted to reach a settlement, according to the professor.<\/p>\n \u201cI have refused to compromise,\u201d Prof Saqi said, adding that Ali Gohar Shah was elderly and had visited him despite being unwell.<\/p>\n \u201cOur fight is not against any political party but against the culture of hooliganism,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Prof Saqi said his personal interests were secondary and stressed that the dignity and status of teachers must be protected.<\/p>\n \u201cA teacher is a permanent institution and a symbol of respect. Teachers are respected across the world,\u201d he said, adding that he wanted the status and dignity of teachers to be restored.<\/p>\n He demanded that the main accused surrender to police and publicly apologise for the incident.<\/p>\n \u201cThe accused should admit that assaulting a teacher was a serious crime,\u201d Prof Saqi said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
