Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca said the debate surrounding the VAR decision that awarded Erling Haaland\u2019s winning goal against Manchester United should not \u200bovershadow his side\u2019s performance in Sunday\u2019s 1-0 derby victory with \u200c10 men.<\/strong><\/p>\n Haaland\u2019s second-half strike was initially ruled out for offside before being awarded following a VAR review that judged the Norwegian to be onside. Refereeing body Pro Ref later \u200backnowledged that VAR had been wrong to allow the decisive goal.<\/p>\n City \u200bwere reduced to 10 men in the 23rd minute when \u2060Phil Foden was sent off for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes but \u200bheld on to secure the win.<\/p>\n \u201cTo talk about one moment after that \u200bgame when we played for 70, 75 minutes with 10 players is quite poor. I think the performance was unbelievable and I\u2019m pleased,\u201d Maresca told reporters on Wednesday ahead \u200bof Thursday\u2019s League Cup third-round tie against Norwich City.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is knowledge that \u200bthere was a mistake and that\u2019s all. Sometimes it goes for you, sometimes against you.\u201d<\/p>\n The \u200cCity \u2060boss also pointed to a controversial decision in a 2-1 defeat by Manchester United in January 2023, saying the club was still waiting for an apology after Fernandes scored despite Marcus Rashford being in an offside position.<\/p>\n Maresca \u200bwas an assistant coach \u200bat City at \u2060the time.<\/p>\n \u201cThree years ago when I was here, it happened the exact same against Manchester United. The goal \u200bwas not a regular goal and no one apologised. We \u200bare still \u2060waiting for the apology for that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Maresca added that VAR officials often had little time to make difficult decisions and mistakes were inevitable.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not \u2060easy for \u200bthe VAR and the people in front \u200bof the screen. To make a decision in 10, 20 seconds is not easy for them. \u200bSometimes they make mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
