ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar stressed the importance of uninterrupted energy supplies and the safe and expeditious passage of ships during a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to a Foreign Office statement, the two foreign ministers discussed the latest regional developments.<\/p>\n

Dar highlighted the importance of maintaining uninterrupted energy supplies and ensuring the safe and expeditious passage of commercial vessels, particularly given their implications for developing countries and global supply chains.<\/p>\n

He underscored that dialogue and diplomacy remained the only viable means of ensuring peace and stability in the region.<\/p>\n

The two sides agreed to maintain close coordination and cooperation and decided to meet in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.<\/p>\n

Energy supply concerns<\/h2>\n

The call comes amid disruptions to regional energy supplies and maritime routes following the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

The war, pitting the United States and Israel against Iran for the past six months, has seen Tehran impose a stranglehold on the vital Strait of Hormuz, restricting Gulf crude exports.<\/p>\n

The situation has worsened with Yemen\u2019s Iran-backed Houthis targeting an alternative export route, through the Bab al-Mandab Strait.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia\u2019s national oil company Aramco has informed at least two European refineries that they will not receive oil shipments next month, according to a Bloomberg report on Friday.<\/p>\n

Saudi exports through the Bab al-Mandab Strait are continuing to suffer, with weekly traffic since the start of August at under a third of this year\u2019s seven-day average, data shows.<\/p>\n

Traffic through Bab al-Mandab has been disrupted following recent Houthi gains on the Red Sea coast, hitting Saudi exports particularly hard.<\/p>\n

The Iran-backed group now controls the narrow Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital artery for Saudi oil exports, as the wider Middle East war chokes off the Strait of Hormuz shipping route.<\/p>\n

Maritime tracking firm Kpler data shows that in the past seven days just five laden vessels carrying Saudi products have left the Red Sea via the vital route.<\/p>\n

The figure has not been higher since the week of July 24, when 11 vessels laden with Saudi products exited the Red Sea through the strait.<\/p>\n

Pakistan has continued to emphasise the importance of diplomacy and uninterrupted energy supplies to mitigate the impact of regional instability on developing economies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
