Instead, it suggests the brain is made up of two separate nervous systems that evolved from different groups of early cells.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, found that the front and back parts of the brain come from different groups of early cells during embryo development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Scientists found that one group of cells with the Otx2 gene becomes the forebrain and midbrain. Another group with the Gbx2 gene forms the hindbrain, which controls important functions like breathing, heartbeat, sleep, and hunger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These two groups of cells developed along separate paths and did not mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For decades, scientists have had trouble growing human hindbrain neurons in the lab. This has made it hard to study disorders like spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The neurons grown in the lab showed electrical activity and made proteins typical of hindbrain cells. This could give scientists a new way to study brainstem disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Scientists also found that this two-origin pattern has existed for hundreds of millions of years in animals like chickens, zebrafish, and acorn worms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These findings could help research into treatments for SMA, ALS, and other brain conditions.
