MOSCOW: The largest Ukrainian drone attack reported so far on Moscow region killed two \u200cpeople and damaged part of an oil refinery in the capital, authorities said on Sunday, as Russia enters the final day of parliamentary elections.<\/strong><\/p>\n Ukraine and Russia have continued attacks on each other\u2019s energy infrastructure despite an announcement by US President \u200bDonald Trump on Monday that they had agreed to stop.<\/p>\n Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said \u200bon his Telegram channel that Russia had downed more than 1,600 drones since \u2060Saturday, including 450 headed for Moscow.<\/p>\n \u201cThe unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of \u200bdisrupting the elections,\u201d he said. \u201cThe adversary failed to achieve this.\u201d<\/p>\n Several drones reached the premises of the \u200boil refinery and one hit an apartment building, he said. \u201cGlass went flying, people started screaming and shouting. I turned around, and the \u200bentrance doors had already been blown out, debris everywhere,\u201d said resident Vitaliy, who gave only his first name.<\/p>\n A \u200cfacility at \u2060the Moscow refinery was damaged in the attack, Mayor Sobyanin said, without giving further details, news agency Interfax reported.<\/p>\n Reuters witnesses in Moscow heard blasts and saw plumes of smoke billowing from the site of the refinery.<\/p>\n Ukrainian strikes have knocked out a significant part of Russia\u2019s oil refining capacity, triggering \u200boil product shortages, fuel \u200bprice increases and \u2060long queues at filling stations in many regions across the country\u2019s 11 time zones.<\/p>\n The Moscow plant, which has been targeted multiple times, processed 11.6 \u200bmillion metric tons of oil in 2024, producing 2.9 million tons of \u200bgasoline and \u20603.2 million tons of diesel, the latest available data shows.<\/p>\n Ukraine has not commented on the attacks. Both sides say they do not target civilians.<\/p>\n In the wider Moscow region, in addition to the two deaths, \u2060400 \u200bpeople, including 70 children, were evacuated from a 21-storey apartment \u200bblock in the Ramenskoye district and a number of homes were damaged, said Governor Andrei Vorobyov.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
