WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Saturday that he plans to appoint \u200ba new artificial intelligence adviser, known as an \u201cAI czar,\u201d and create an \u201cAI force,\u201d though \u200che did not provide details about either initiative or how they would be implemented.<\/strong><\/p>\n Fears are growing in Washington among lawmakers about the risks posed by AI technology on humans and property. Earlier this month, former Anthropic researcher \u200bJacob Coxon said that \u201cpeople building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all \u200bby the end of the decade.\u201d Trump has repeatedly downplayed concerns about AI and \u2060argued that additional regulation is unnecessary.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth \u200bof this incredible Industry,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform. \u201cRather, we will cherish it, \u200bhelp it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n If Trump follows through on \u200bthe pledge, it would be his second AI czar. Venture capitalist David Sacks previously served in \u200bthe role before stepping down in the spring and moving into an external advisory position.<\/span><\/p>\n Sacks has echoed Trump\u2019s skepticism of \u200cnew \u2060AI regulation. Speaking at a Politico event on Wednesday, he said AI developers should be responsible for ensuring the safety of their products and could be held liable if problems arise, adding that new federal rules are unnecessary.<\/span><\/p>\n The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on \u200bTrump\u2019s post.<\/span><\/p>\n Trump\u2019s post comes \u200bahead of his scheduled \u2060meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Washington and Beijing are competing for leadership in artificial intelligence, which both governments view as vital \u200bto their economic and military strength. Trump and technology executives have argued \u200bthat excessive regulation \u2060would slow US AI development and undermine American companies\u2019 ability to compete with Chinese rivals, a claim that safety advocates often refute.<\/span><\/p>\n
