NEW YORK: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, with the two leaders discussing ways to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan\u2019s commitment to its historic and fraternal ties with Syria and reiterated Islamabad\u2019s support for Syria\u2019s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and political independence.<\/p>\n

e expressed good wishes for the Syrian people in their efforts towards national stabilization, cohesion, peace and economic recovery.<\/p>\n

The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, including through enhanced high-level exchanges, activation of institutional mechanisms, and cooperation in trade and investment, education, information technology and other areas of mutual interest. PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan\u2019s readiness to contribute to Syria\u2019s reconstruction and economic recovery.<\/p>\n

Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan\u2019s principled support for Syria\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He underscored the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and respect for the principles of the UN Charter for promoting peace and stability in the region.<\/p>\n

The two leaders also exchanged views on the regional situation. Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan\u2019s steadfast support for the Palestinian people\u2019s right to self-determination and for a just and lasting resolution of the Palestine issue in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and international law.<\/p>\n

The meeting provided an opportunity to reaffirm the longstanding bonds of friendship between Pakistan and Syria and to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the years ahead.<\/p>\n

Syria seeks stronger defence ties with Pakistan<\/h2>\n

Last month, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, along with a delegation, called on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces (COAS & CDF), at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).<\/p>\n

During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, the regional security environment and avenues for enhanced bilateral defence and security cooperation were discussed.<\/p>\n

The COAS highlighted Pakistan\u2019s longstanding fraternal ties with Syria and shared Pakistan\u2019s perspective on global peace and regional stability, underscoring the importance of cooperation and collaborative efforts to address common security challenges.<\/p>\n

Al-Shaibani appreciated the professional role played by Pakistan Armed Forces in promoting regional peace and stability. Both sides reiterated their resolve to further strengthen bilateral ties and expand engagements in the fields of defence and security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
