LISBON- Hundreds of truckers took part in a \u201cgo-slow\u201d convoy along a motorway in north-central Portugal on Friday, while commuters blared their horns on Lisbon\u2019s \u200bmain bridge to protest against soaring fuel costs.<\/strong><\/p>\n Fuel prices have \u200creached all-time highs in Portugal due to supply disruptions related to the Iran war and refinery attacks linked to the war in Ukraine. Prices at the pump increased 24% in August \u200byear-on-year, with diesel hitting more than \u20ac2 ($2.28) per litre, according to Eurostat \u200bdata.<\/p>\n Trucks slowly rolled along the A1 motorway in a 150-km (93-mile) convoy \u2060from Paredes in the north to the central Portuguese city of Coimbra. \u200bDemonstrators demanded eligibility for the partial refunds of the tax on petroleum \u200bproducts enjoyed by freight and passenger transport companies.<\/p>\n Video from state broadcaster RTP showed a truck leading the convoy bearing a sign reading: \u201cToday, the trucks are stopping \u2014 but their importance \u200bisn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking to reporters in Cascais, Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Miguel Pinto Luz \u200backnowledged the trucking industry had been \u201coverlooked in some ways\u201d in the measures taken so \u200cfar \u2060to limit the impact of rising fuel prices.<\/p>\n He pledged to review their proposals and scheduled a meeting with the movement\u2019s representatives at the ministry next Monday.<\/p>\n In Lisbon, commuters launched a honking protest at 8 a.m. local time (0700 \u200bGMT) while crossing the \u200bApril 25 bridge, which \u2060connects the capital to the working-class outskirts on the southern bank of the Tagus river.<\/p>\n They called for the \u200breinstatement of remote working \u2014 a policy temporarily applied during \u200bthe COVID-19 \u2060pandemic \u2013 as well as the suspension of toll payments and the 23% value-added tax on fuel, Aristides Teixeira, spokesperson of the Ponte 25 de Abril Users\u2019 Association, \u2060told \u200bLusa.<\/p>\n The group also seeks the resignation of Environment \u200bMinister Maria Gra\u00e7a Carvalho over comments in which she suggested citizens drive more slowly to \u200breduce their fuel consumption.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
