WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping drank tea at the White House and visited \u200bthe National Archives on Friday, ending a three-day summit that showcased personal diplomacy rather than big public breakthroughs on a host of contentious issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n Trump said \u201cour farmers are going to \u200cbe happy\u201d as a result of the talks but did not provide details. Xi said the US-China relationship had developed into a constructive one of \u201cstrategic stability on the basis of respect, fairness and reciprocity.\u201d<\/p>\n The summit between the world\u2019s two largest economies featured military flyovers, ceremonial tours and a state dinner, but left unresolved major differences over trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and China\u2019s ties to \u200bIran. Details of the limited trade agreements reached during the visit will be released on Monday, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said.<\/p>\n One tangible outcome of the visit was that the \u200bUS and China agreed to extend by two months a trade truce that was due to expire on November 10, allowing more time to work \u2060on a potentially bigger trade deal.<\/p>\n Greer told CNBC that the US has agreed with China on exempting some key goods from disputes over trade, including exports to China of agricultural products and medical devices and \u200bimports of consumer and non-sensitive goods.<\/p>\n Trump highlighted progress under a bilateral trade mechanism, citing what he described as increased market access for US farmers and ranchers, while both leaders identified AI as an area for \u200bdialogue.<\/p>\n \u201cIn some ways, the best thing that we accomplished in this visit is to continue the conversation,\u201d US Ambassador to China David Perdue told Fox News\u2019 \u201cAmerica\u2019s Newsroom\u201d program on Friday.<\/p>\n Trump announced in a social media post that he and Xi would meet twice more this year, in China in November for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and in Miami in December at a G20 summit. After tea in the \u200bWhite House Red Room, Trump and Xi rode in limousines to the National Archives, where they reviewed the US Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.<\/p>\n Asked about Iran, Trump said he and Xi had \u200bdiscussed it and that \u201cI think we\u2019re going to do great,\u201d without elaborating. Beijing has denied US allegations of helping Iran\u2019s leaders in the conflict launched by Trump in February.<\/p>\n Perdue said in an interview with CNBC on Friday that \u200cTrump reiterated \u2060to Xi that direct or indirect support for Iran was \u201ctotally unacceptable\u201d and received assurances that China would not do so.<\/p>\n
