DEBRECEN, Hungary \u2013 Ireland will play their Nations League fixture against Israel on Sunday, after \u200ba vote took place within the squad on whether to fulfil the fixture, Football Association of Ireland (FAI) CEO David \u200cCourell said on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n Ireland had postponed their pre-match press conference ahead of the game in Hungary, and their training session was also delayed.<\/p>\n This was to allow talks to continue between Irish players, coaching staff and officials, after one player announced his intention to withdraw from the squad.<\/p>\n The game has been under the spotlight \u200bsince the sides were drawn together in February, with Ireland one of Europe\u2019s most outspoken critics of Israel\u2019s war in Gaza. \u200bThere have been numerous protests in Ireland asking for the team not to fulfil the fixtures with \u2060Israel.<\/p>\n \u201cThis morning, a player expressed their discomfort with fulfilling this fixture to the head coach and indicated their intent to withdraw from \u200bthe squad,\u201d Courell told reporters.<\/p>\n \u201cUltimately, within the last maybe 90 minutes, we carried out a vote amongst the squad to establish their sentiment \u200bon fulfilling the fixtures and it was a significant majority that was returned with the intention to continue.<\/p>\n \u201cSo based on that, the association took the decision on behalf of Irish football that this fixture would continue as we have always intended to fulfil the fixtures.\u201d<\/p>\n Courell said that four hours of conversations among \u200bthe players took place on Saturday, which at times included coaching staff and the executive. This came after a two-hour meeting on Friday, \u200bwhen players agreed to travel to Hungary.<\/p>\n The CEO declined to reveal details of how many players voted, but said a significant majority were in favour \u200cof playing \u2060the game.<\/p>\n \u201cThe players are training today. It\u2019s an ongoing discussion, and we haven\u2019t come to a kind of conclusion on this,\u201d Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe game is going ahead, we\u2019re going to train, and there will be more discussions tonight and probably tomorrow, it\u2019s just a unique situation, and we are trying to limit the damage.\u201d<\/p>\n PRESS CONFERENCE POSTPONED<\/strong><\/p>\n Ireland were due to hold the press conference on Saturday but \u200bshortly before the scheduled start \u200bthe FAI told reporters that \u2060this would now take place following the team\u2019s training session at the stadium in Debrecen.<\/p>\n Ireland players will not appear at any press conferences for the remainder of the international window.<\/p>\n \u201cIn that conversation yesterday with \u200bthe players, it was clear that they felt uncomfortable in this environment dealing with all of the \u200brespective questions that \u2060were coming to them that are not about football,\u201d Courell said.<\/p>\n He also said there would be no pre-match handshake with the Israeli team or exchange of pennants, and they intended to wear black armbands in recognition of all the lives lost in the conflict.<\/p>\n FAI members voted in November \u2060for its \u200bboard to request that UEFA suspend Israel from European competitions, but a motion in \u200bfavour of proceeding with the fixtures was passed at a meeting in July.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
