They worked with an international team from the School of Pharmacy and the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering to develop a material that provides strong, lasting dental care. Their results appeared in Nature Communications.

This protein-based gel does not contain any fluoride and copies the natural proteins that help enamel grow in early life. Dentists can quickly apply it just like they do with regular fluoride treatments. After application, the gel forms a strong, thin layer that fills in holes and cracks in the teeth.

The gel then serves as a framework, pulling calcium and phosphate from saliva to help new minerals grow in a controlled way, a process called epitaxial mineralization. This helps the new minerals join with the natural tooth, restoring the structure and strength of healthy enamel.

The new material can also be used on exposed dentine to grow a protective layer similar to enamel. This helps treat severe tooth sensitivity and makes it easier to bond future dental repairs.

Loss of enamel is a main cause of tooth decay and affects nearly half of people worldwide. Since enamel cannot grow back on its own, damage has usually been permanent. Serious enamel loss can cause infections, tooth loss, and even health problems like diabetes or heart disease.

Current treatments like fluoride varnishes and remineralization solutions only ease symptoms and do not replace lost enamel.

Dr. Abshar Hasan, a postdoctoral fellow and lead author, said the new material helps crystals grow together to rebuild healthy enamel.

The team tested the new enamel by simulating real-life conditions such as brushing, chewing, and eating acidic foods. They found that the regrown enamel acts just like natural enamel.

Hasan pointed out that this technology is safe, can be widely used, and was created for both dentists and patients.

Source link

Scientists at the University of Nottingham have created a new gel inspired by nature that can repair and regrow tooth enamel.
