British police said on Monday they were investigating whether individuals acting for a foreign state were involved in an apparent plot to attack an airbase used by the United States, but said five men they had arrested would be released on bail.<\/strong><\/p>\n Below is what is known \u200bso far about the incident at RAF Fairford:<\/p>\n WHAT HAPPENED AT FAIRFORD?<\/strong><\/p>\n Police were called to the airbase, 90 miles (145 km) west of London, \u200cearly on Sunday morning by a local farmer who said she had seen three large white vans parked near the base and a group of \u201chooded and masked men\u201d running into a field nearby.<\/p>\n Armed officers from the local force, Gloucestershire Police, responded and arrested five men in the Whelford area, about a mile from the base.<\/p>\n The five men were initially arrested on suspicion of offences \u200bunder the explosives act and later on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act after counter-terrorism police took over the investigation.<\/p>\n About 85 households were \u200bevacuated from properties near where the three vehicles were found and a 400-metre cordon was put in place around them.<\/p>\n WHY WERE <\/strong>\u2060<\/strong>THE MEN RELEASED?<\/strong><\/p>\n The head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing, Laurence Taylor, said on Monday afternoon the men were being released after \u201cextensive interviews and inquiries\u201d and that they \u200bremained under investigation.<\/p>\n \u201cThey are subject to stringent conditions on their movement and contact with others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He later said the incident was being considered from all angles, including \u200bwhether offences had been committed \u201cby proxies or individuals either knowingly or unknowingly working on behalf of a foreign state.\u201d<\/p>\n WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE MEN WHO WERE ARRESTED?<\/strong><\/p>\n The five men detained were all British nationals aged between 23 and 25 who lived in London, police said.<\/p>\n An image on social media purported to show some of the suspects, seated shirtless with hands behind their \u200bbacks, after their arrest. Reuters was unable to independently locate and verify the source of the photograph.<\/p>\n WHY WOULD FAIRFORD BE A TARGET?<\/strong><\/p>\n Fairford, which opened in 1944 and \u200bwas used by allied troops for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, has this year been used by US forces for strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n It is one of the US Air Force\u2019s only \u200cEuropean airfields \u2060suitable for heavy bombers, and played a key role in both the first Gulf War in 1991 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003.<\/p>\n Britain said in July its armed forces were ready to protect Fairford after Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards warned it not to allow US bombers to fly from the base. The Guards said any base used to launch attacks would be a legitimate target.<\/p>\n Over the last six weeks there has been increased surveillance in the area after a specific threat from the Iranians, \u200baccording to a local councillor.<\/p>\n WHAT HAVE PEOPLE \u200bSAID SO FAR ABOUT THE INCIDENT?<\/strong><\/p>\n The \u2060farmer, who has not been named, told British media she saw eight to 10 men running from the vans with their faces covered and that they got within about 100 metres of the perimeter fence of the airbase.<\/p>\n \u201cI just can\u2019t process \u200bhow that base was on such high alert, and that the men were even there,\u201d she said, adding that a \u200bblockade had focused only \u2060on the main entrance.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m really glad they ran away.\u201d<\/p>\n British Defence Minister Wes Streeting told BBC TV he was grateful to the witness but that she only had a \u201cpartial picture\u201d of what had happened after she said she was \u201cstaggered\u201d it had been left to a member of the public to report them despite the heightened threat.<\/p>\n US President Donald Trump \u2060said on Sunday \u200bthe group had been under investigation as part of a long-running investigation. \u201cWe had them under view \u200bfor a long time, and we got them,\u201d he said, adding that the suspects intended \u201cbig damage\u201d to the base.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s embassy in London said in a statement on Monday that it \u201ccategorically rejects and strongly condemns \u200bthe recent unfounded and malicious speculations\u201d about Tehran\u2019s possible involvement in the incident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
