Sri Lanka\u2019s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage produced a stunning final-throw effort to win javelin gold at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Monday, while Pakistan\u2019s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem endured another frustrating night.<\/strong><\/p>\n Pathirage saved his best for last, launching the spear 88.55m with his sixth and final attempt to seal the title. The 88.33m he had thrown in round four had already put him top of the standings.<\/p>\n India claimed the other two podium places. Yashvir Singh took silver with a personal-best 85.72m, while Rohit Yadav won bronze with 84.35m.<\/p>\n Arshad, who won Olympic gold in Paris with a record 92.97m, never found his rhythm and had to settle for fourth. The Pakistani opened with 76.69m, fouled his second attempt and improved to 80.29m in round three. He then fouled all of his last three throws, ending his hopes of a medal.<\/p>\n It continues a difficult spell for the 29-year-old, whose form has dipped since his Paris triumph. He also struggled at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the World Ultimate Championship in Hungary.<\/p>\n Pathirage, by contrast, is in superb form. The Sri Lankan has now won three major titles in recent months, having also been victorious in Glasgow and Hungary, and he has a Diamond League title to his name too. His personal best of 92.62m is just 35cm short of Arshad\u2019s Olympic record.<\/p>\n Pakistan\u2019s Yasir Sultan failed to make the final eight. His best throw was 73.50m, from a series of a foul, 73.50m and 73.47m. The 2023 Asian Championships in Bangkok, where he set a personal best of 79.93m, appears a distant memory.<\/p>\n Japan\u2019s Yuta Sakiyama retired injured during his fourth attempt, while India\u2019s Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra missed the event through injury.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
