WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Monday that British police should not have released on bail five men who were arrested near an airbase used by the United States over a suspected bomb plot.<\/strong><\/p>\n Trump added that the case \u201cmight be\u201d linked to Iran but declined to give details.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m surprised that they released them, I wouldn\u2019t have done that,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, while adding that British authorities had worked \u201cvery closely\u201d with the United States.<\/p>\n \u201cWe know everything about them. We would not have released them.\u201d<\/p>\n US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also declined to give specifics but told broadcaster Fox News late Monday that the incident \u201cclearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a lot more news that\u2019ll come out on this in the days to come, but there\u2019s only so much I can say right now at this point about it, other than this is a very serious thing, and it was\u2026responded to appropriately,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n The five men were arrested early Sunday near the Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford base in southwest England, from which US bombers have taken off to target Iran since March.<\/p>\n British counter-terrorism police announced on Monday that the five men \u2014 all London-based Britons in their mid-20s \u2014 had been freed on bail, and that officers were probing whether a \u201cforeign state\u201d could be involved.<\/p>\n Asked whether the case was linked to Iran, Trump replied: \u201cIt might be.\u201d<\/p>\n Pressed to give details, Trump said: \u201cI\u2019d rather not. I mean I know the answer, I could be very specific, but I\u2019d rather not say. I would not have released them.\u201d<\/p>\n Iran has denied involvement in any plot to target the base.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
