The findings show how Bennu was shaped at the boundary between hot and cold regions that formed the planets 4.5 billion years ago.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>This mission gives us our best look yet at the cosmic dust that planets are made from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bennu is a near-Earth asteroid that NASA explored with its OSIRIS-REx mission from 2018 to 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Researchers around the world received the sample material, including half a gram sent to Schonbachler\u2019s lab. Schonbachler\u2019s findings have changed how we understand where Bennu came from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Maria Schonbachler, a professor of isotope geochemistry in Switzerland, said: \u201c Bennu may offer our best glimpse of the original mix of chemical elements from which the terrestrial planets were ultimately built.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bennu and Ryugu are mostly leftovers from when an impact broke apart an asteroid or proto-planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some scientists think these parent bodies may have formed far out in the outer solar system, possibly alongside comets. They also suggest these bodies formed after the planets, since things moved more slowly in the outer solar system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, isotopic analysis of the Bennu sample by Schonbachler\u2019s team challenges this idea.
