The Trump administration imposed sanctions on Iran\u2019s rail and auto sectors and their foreign suppliers, the Treasury Department said on Thursday, widening its wartime economic campaign to isolate Tehran.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u200bsanctions are part of the department\u2019s \u201cOperation Economic Outcast,\u201d announced August 24, which aims \u200bto cut Tehran\u2019s funding for the war, missile construction, cyberattacks and the \u2060Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or IRGC.<\/p>\n

The move extends US economic pressure on Iran from sea to \u200bland, targeting sectors Tehran has leaned on since a naval blockade cut off its oil \u200bshipments through the Strait of Hormuz. But the expanding sanctions risk inflicting severe costs on ordinary Iranians, one analyst said.<\/p>\n

The US blockade of Iranian ports has forced Tehran to rely more on autos and rail for \u200btransporting petroleum, fertilizer, chemicals and other goods. Thursday\u2019s sanctions target those alternatives, according to \u200bthe Treasury Department.<\/p>\n

The sanctions designate Iran Khodro Company, or IKCO, and SAIPA Iranian Automobile Manufacturing Company, or SAIPA. \u200cTreasury \u2060said the two companies represent more than 90% of Iran\u2019s domestic auto market.<\/p>\n

Treasury also designated the state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Railway Company, which provides passenger and freight services, the Raja Passenger Trains Company and Sherkat-E Rah Ahan-E Khamle-O-Naghle, also known as the Railway Transportation \u200bCompany, which it said \u200bis a top private \u2060freight line.<\/p>\n

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the action \u201cdirectly targets Iran\u2019s enablers and lays the groundwork for the United States and our partners \u200bto drain the regime\u2019s revenue once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thursday\u2019s sanctions also \u200btarget foreign companies \u2060in Indonesia, the UAE and Turkey that supply Iran\u2019s auto industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe blockade squeezed Iran at sea, sanctions increasingly isolate it by air, and now Washington is constricting its economic arteries on \u2060land,\u201d said Brett \u200bErickson, a sanctions expert and managing principal at Obsidian \u200bRisk Advisors. \u201cYou cannot choke an economy like this without choking the livelihoods of the people who depend on \u200bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
