Cornell University will examine the role of fraternities and sororities on campus following an outcry over the school\u2019s handling of a student\u2019s rape allegations, the Ivy League school\u2019s president \u200bsaid on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n A civil lawsuit filed last month by the woman, who alleges \u200cshe was drugged and raped in 2024 by several members of the Chi Phi fraternity, has sparked outrage and soul-searching at Cornell over its campus culture at the school in Ithaca, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n In a video message, Cornell \u200bUniversity President Michael Kotlikoff said the school would take steps to prevent a \u200bsimilar situation in the future. That includes \u201ca serious look at the role of \u2060fraternities and sororities in campus life,\u201d Kotlikoff said.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAt their best, these organizations can provide \u200bstudents with friendship, belonging, mentorship and a powerful sense of community,\u201d he said. \u201cBut being part of \u200ba group can never diminish individual responsibility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The university will seek input, he said, from students, alumni and others on how to \u201cpreserve what is valuable about Greek life while strengthening individual accountability, transparency and a culture in \u200bwhich every member understands their responsibility to protect the safety and well-being of others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The lawsuit \u200bagainst Cornell, seven fraternity members and others, alleges that the school failed to adequately punish some of \u200cthe accused \u2060students.<\/span><\/p>\n The accused men have denied all wrongdoing, the New York Times reported.<\/span><\/p>\n Cornell has defended its handling of the matter, saying it launched a comprehensive investigation and barred the Chi Phi fraternity from campus. The school said it imposed a range of disciplinary measures, including expulsions.<\/span><\/p>\n But \u201cwe must \u200bdo better,\u201d Kotlikoff said. \u201cWe \u200bdon\u2019t have all the \u2060answers, but we are committed to investigating and finding the answers our community deserves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n He vowed that university officials would \u201cbe more transparent\u201d about their \u200bactions related to the 2024 incident, but he did not detail \u200bspecific initiatives that \u2060the university would take.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn the coming weeks, we will create additional opportunities for members of our community to ask questions and hear directly from university leadership,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n
