{"id":85016,"date":"2026-10-07T02:18:33","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T02:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/85016"},"modified":"2026-10-07T02:18:35","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T02:18:35","slug":"kenya-confirms-first-ebola-case-after-man-dies-in-nairobi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/85016","title":{"rendered":"Kenya confirms first Ebola case after man dies in Nairobi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size:16px;line-height:1.6\">\n<p><strong> Kenya confirmed its first Ebola case on Tuesday after a Kenyan citizen who had travelled from \u200cDemocratic Republic of Congo died in Nairobi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kenya is the fourth country to record a case linked to the Ebola epidemic in eastern Congo, the second largest on record with more than 8,000 cases.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda reported 20 cases and two deaths earlier in the year but was declared Ebola-free in August. A doctor who returned to France in June from Congo tested positive but there was no \u200bfurther spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>The Kenyan patient, who had lived in Congo for seven years, had been ill for about a month before travelling by \u200broad from Congo to Uganda\u2019s capital, Kampala, and then flying to Nairobi on Saturday, Kenya\u2019s Health Minister Aden Duale told \u2060a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>After arriving at Nairobi\u2019s international airport, he passed through health screening and was later taken by a relative to Nairobi Hospital. He was admitted \u200bwith fever, chills and bleeding beneath the skin and was quickly placed in isolation, Duale said.<\/p>\n<p>He died late on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said \u200bin a statement that it was immediately sending a high-level team to Kenya to provide support, adding that the case \u201cunderscores the importance of sustained preparedness across the region\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X that WHO was supporting the Kenyan and Ugandan governments and recommended against any travel restrictions on countries affected by the outbreak.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>PATIENT TO BE BURIED ON \u200bTUESDAY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The patient was due to be buried later on Tuesday under protocols designed to prevent further spread of the virus, Duale said.<\/p>\n<p>Health authorities have identified 28 \u200bpeople he came into contact with in Kenya, including relatives and healthcare workers. They are trying to trace another 23 passengers and four crew members who were on his Jambojet \u200cflight, Duale \u2060said.<\/p>\n<p>Duale said Kenya had trained nearly 5,000 health workers across the country on prevention and management and the UN\u2019s senior Ebola coordinator, Julien Harneis, told Reuters he expected a \u201csolid health response\u201d from Kenya to manage the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the incident raised questions about measures meant to prevent the spread of the virus across borders.<br \/>Kenya\u2019s health ministry director general, Patrick Amoth, said the patient may have passed through airport screening because medication had masked his symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>It was also not clear how he had crossed from \u200bCongo into Uganda, given that the \u200bborder has been closed since May.<\/p>\n<p>\u2060Africa CDC said he spent a night in Uganda before boarding the flight to Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about this, Ugandan government spokesperson Alan Kasujja said he had no idea what the man\u2019s condition was while in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave Uganda out of this conversation,\u201d he \u200bsaid in a text message. \u201cWe don\u2019t have Ebola here.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>KENYA HOSTS US EBOLA QUARANTINE FACILITY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After the outbreak was declared in \u200bCongo, the United States \u2060built a 50-bed Ebola quarantine camp for US citizens on an air force base in central Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>The facility is currently empty and has only housed seven people. Kenyan officials have said it could receive Kenyans and other nationalities, but the US government has not confirmed that.<\/p>\n<p>Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, whether \u2060living or \u200bdead. The disease can cause fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200boutbreak in Congo was declared in mid-May but may have started months earlier.
