UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin on Thursday told the 55 member national associations of European football\u2019s governing body that he would stand for a final re-election next year.<\/strong><\/p>\n The announcement reversed the Slovenian\u2019s previous decision that he would not seek re-election and came following \u201cunanimous\u201d support from the national associations, UEFA said in a statement.<\/p>\n The 58-year-old was first elected in 2016 to replace Michel Platini, who resigned after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) banned him from football-related activities over a FIFA corruption case.<\/p>\n Ceferin will stand for a final four-year term at UEFA\u2019s congress in Kazakhstan next April.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to thank the national associations for their trust,\u201d Ceferin said following Thursday\u2019s meeting in Berlin.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have faced extraordinary challenges over the past years, and we have faced them as one team.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is still important work ahead, and I have therefore accepted their request.<\/p>\n \u201cMy ambition remains the same: to keep European football united, make our game stronger and leave UEFA ready for the next generation.\u201d<\/p>\n In their statement, UEFA said that over the previous months the 55 national associations had \u201cunanimously\u201d asked Ceferin to reconsider his previous intention not to seek re-election.<\/p>\n \u201cThe meeting also focused on the future governance and leadership of FIFA,\u201d said UEFA, who have led opposition to Gianni Infantino\u2019s leadership of world football\u2019s governing body.<\/p>\n One of their proposals is that the FIFA president \u201cleads, not manages\u201d.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
