Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that Russia was expressing its \u201cthanks\u201d for a diesel deal agreed with the United States by attacking Ukraine, after fresh Russian attacks killed 15 people, according to authorities.<\/strong><\/p>\n The deal, which US President Donald Trump announced on Friday after a call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, would see Moscow release large amounts of diesel onto global markets in exchange for sanctions relief.<\/p>\n Zelensky told reporters on Friday that the deal was \u201cunworthy of our partners\u201d and described it as a \u201cweak decision\u201d.<\/p>\n EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Saturday that lifting sanctions on Russian diesel would help fuel the Kremlin\u2019s war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is not the time to ease pressure on Russia, and Europe won\u2019t,\u201d she wrote online.<\/p>\n Germany also said it would continue to push for new EU sanctions on Russia, despite the agreement.<\/p>\n Moscow has intensified its deadly bombardment of Ukraine in recent months, sending civilian casualties soaring, while US-led efforts to broker an end to the more than four-and-a-half year conflict remain deadlocked.<\/p>\n Early Saturday, Russia targeted residential neighbourhoods in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia with \u201cfive guided aerial bombs\u201d, according to Ukraine\u2019s national police service.<\/p>\n At least 15 people were killed, among them three children, Ukraine\u2019s state rescue service said.<\/p>\n \u201cToday, Russia expressed its thanks for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia,\u201d Zelensky said in a post on X.<\/p>\n An AFP correspondent at the scene saw people being pulled from the rubble by Ukrainian emergency services.<\/p>\n \u201cWe saw people under the rubble \u2014 a woman, her husband and a child,\u201d one rescuer, Daniil Pishkin, told AFP.<\/p>\n He added that he saw two people rescued from the wreckage but \u201cunfortunately there was a little girl who died\u201d.<\/p>\n A resident of one of the buildings that was hit, who identified herself as Iryna, 69, said she just had time to seek refuge in the toilets after receiving an air raid warning.<\/p>\n She said her two neighbours were killed.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were 75 years old. They were simply thrown out there, onto the street. They didn\u2019t make it to the hospital,\u201d she told AFP.<\/p>\n Ukraine\u2019s capital Kyiv meanwhile suffered \u201clarge-scale power outages\u201d on Saturday due to Russian strikes, the country\u2019s largest private energy provider, DTEK, said.<\/p>\n AFP reporters heard booms over the capital earlier Saturday, as the city\u2019s mayor reported that a restaurant had been hit.<\/p>\n The strikes came as Ukraine expressed mounting frustration at Washington\u2019s diesel agreement with Russia.<\/p>\n Prices at US gasoline and diesel pumps have surged since late February, when the United States and Israel launched joint military strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n Announcing the deal on Friday, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that diesel prices would be \u201ccoming down, in record numbers, and fast\u201d, in all caps.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to thank President Putin, to be honest with you,\u201d he later told reporters.<\/p>\n In a post on Facebook on Saturday, Zelensky said the deal needed to be reversed.<\/p>\n \u201cRussia\u2019s choice is war. And they will be ready to end it only when they feel that their ability to drag the war out is diminishing,\u201d Zelensky said.<\/p>\n \u201cUnfortunately, the signals Russia received yesterday were entirely different \u2013 signals suggesting that it could simply keep attacking. This needs to be corrected,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n US, Ukrainian and European officials meanwhile met in Miami on Friday in a renewed diplomatic push to end the war.<\/p>\n Trump, who has repeatedly touted his credentials as a peacemaker, has long sought to broker a deal since taking office last January.<\/p>\n US envoy Steve Witkoff posted to X after the meeting that the \u201cconstructive discussions\u201d tackled \u201cpotential avenues to de-escalate and conclude the war with Russia ahead of winter and advance efforts toward a durable and lasting peace\u201d.<\/p>\n Witkoff said the meeting included \u201cthe E3, the European Commission, Ukraine and NATO\u201d.<\/p>\n The Kremlin said Saturday that Trump had conveyed his ideas about how to de-escalate the war to Putin during a phone call on Friday.<\/p>\n Putin received the proposals \u201cwith understanding\u201d, the Kremlin said, without elaborating on what the proposals were or the Russian president\u2019s response.<\/p>\n Russia, which launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, now occupies roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nDeal \u2018needs to be corrected\u2019<\/h2>\n
