{"id":86644,"date":"2026-10-10T23:36:34","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T23:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/86644"},"modified":"2026-10-10T23:36:35","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T23:36:35","slug":"laibas-uncle-reveals-how-family-lost-millions-in-us-scholarship-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/86644","title":{"rendered":"Laiba\u2019s uncle reveals how family lost millions in US scholarship scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size:16px;line-height:1.6\">\n<p><strong>A maternal uncle of a Pakistani student, Laiba Ejaz, who committed suicide in Islamabad after being defrauded by an education consultant, said she had dreamed of studying in the US and becoming a scientist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to ARY News, Laiba\u2019s maternal uncle said that to make her dream come true, she had approached a consultancy in Islamabad\u2019s Blue Area, where a man identified as Noman offered to arrange a scholarship.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"entry-content-asset videofit\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Islamabad Student Laiba Ejaz Case | Uncle\u2019s Statement\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S9SCDuNyT4s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposed arrangement, Laiba\u2019s family was told they would have to pay 20 percent of the costs, while the university would cover the remaining 80 percent.<\/p>\n<p>After submitting the required documents, the family was informed that the scholarship had been approved, her maternal uncle said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the consultant learned the family had savings of around Rs.1.2 to 1.3 million and persuaded them to hand over the money.<\/p>\n<p>The family was subsequently told that a bank statement was also required under new rules, he said. They sold a plot of land and transferred Rs.4 million to the consultant\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>About a week later, they were asked to provide a further Rs.3.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>According to Laiba\u2019s uncle, the family sold jewelry, purchased US dollars\u2019 worth of that amount, and also transferred the money to the same account.<\/p>\n<p>The consultant then provided a bank statement showing funds totaling Rs. 7.2 million, her uncle said.<\/p>\n<p>However, when the family contacted Harvard University to verify the documents, they discovered that they were fake, he added.<\/p>\n<p>He also named a woman called Eliza, based in the US, who he said had been sending the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Laiba reportedly worked as a private tutor in Islamabad\u2019s G-11 sector to support her ambitions.
