KATHMANDU: Nepali authorities urged villagers on Sunday to move to safer places after \u200ba flood in a river in the central part of the \u200ccountry swept away several houses and infrastructure, but there were no reports of any casualties.<\/strong><\/p>\n Two women and three men were out of contact, the national disaster authority said. The \u200barmy said a further 49 people, including a foreigner, had been \u200brescued. They did not give the person\u2019s nationality.<\/p>\n A landslide in Chumnubri \u2060village in Gorkha district, about 100 km (62 miles) west of Kathmandu, blocked \u200bthe Budhi Gandaki River, leading to downstream flooding, authorities said.<\/p>\n The Budhi Gandaki is \u200ba tributary of the Trishuli River, downstream from another tributary where a glacier collapse caused a catastrophic flood in August that killed 1,457 people, with thousands still missing.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have asked \u200bvillagers living along the river banks downstream to evacuate and remain safe,\u201d \u200bsaid Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, the Gorkha district\u2019s most senior bureaucrat. The flooded river carrying muddy sludge was rising and had washed away a highway bridge \u200bconnecting Gorkha with the \u200bneighbouring Dhading district, \u2060said Dharam Raj Uprety, chief of the Authority.<\/p>\n National disaster authorities alerted people living along the river in the Gorkha, \u200bTanahun, Chitwan, East Nawalparasi and West Nawalparasi districts about \u200bthe flood.<\/p>\n \u201cPlease \u2060help ensure that people in at-risk areas are moved to safe locations in time and assist search and rescue operations as needed,\u201d the National Disaster Risk Reduction \u2060and \u200bManagement Authority said in a social media post.<\/p>\n Officials \u200bsaid army and police rescue personnel had reached the area and were also monitoring the situation \u200bfrom a helicopter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The flood swept away about a \u200cdozen \u2060houses and two suspension bridges and damaged a hydroelectric project camp, carrying some of the construction equipment away, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said.<\/p>\n
