The White House said on Tuesday it \u200bhad asked US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign after a series of news reports raised concerns she sold access \u200cto Trump administration officials in exchange for money, gifts and favors.<\/strong><\/p>\n US President Donald Trump had said on Monday that he was considering firing Guilfoyle, who was once engaged to his son Donald Trump Jr. On Tuesday, he told reporters: \u201cShe was doing a good job, but we didn\u2019t like what we were reading.\u201d<\/p>\n US lawmakers had raised the alarm after a series of stories \u200bin the Wall Street Journal beginning last month that detailed Guilfoyle\u2019s conduct, including claims she threatened to use US influence to undermine the \u200bGreek government.<\/p>\n New White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed Guilfoyle had been asked to resign, telling a briefing: \u201cShe has \u2060been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.\u201d<\/p>\n In a post on X, Guilfoyle repeated denials of wrongdoing and said her gratitude and \u200brespect for Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio remained \u201cunwavering.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhile my time as Ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the \u200bAmerica First movement, and the country I love will never end,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThese allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n One of the reports published by the Journal described Guilfoyle\u2019s close relationship with a lobbyist for a Greek energy company and her promotion of that firm, while another cited audio recordings of \u200bGuilfoyle bragging about her ties to wealthy Greek businessmen as she sought an invitation to a Davos dinner honoring another of Trump\u2019s sons, Eric.<\/p>\n US businessman \u200bEric Deters also told the newspaper that Guilfoyle, a former San Francisco prosecutor, had offered access to Trump administration officials for money, at one point asking him to pay \u200cher $100,000 credit \u2060card bill. Britain\u2019s Daily Mail reported last week that the State Department\u2019s internal watchdog was looking into complaints of inappropriate behavior from staff at the Athens embassy.<\/p>\n The Greek government has not commented on the allegations involving her tenure as ambassador.<\/p>\n Neither the State Department nor Washington\u2019s embassy in Athens responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n DEALS AND DIPLOMATIC WAVES<\/strong><\/p>\n Greece has been an important NATO ally of the United States, offering key military facilities to safeguard security in the Eastern Mediterranean, and it leads an \u200bEU maritime mission to protect commercial \u200bshipping in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n During a \u2060visit to Athens last week, Rubio said Greece and the US were launching new counterterrorism information sharing between their law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n Guilfoyle\u2019s tenure in Athens was high profile from the start as she appeared on the cover of Vogue \u200bGreece and attended late-night parties with Greek celebrities.<\/p>\n She aggressively touted American interests, including signing deals for the import of \u200bUS liquefied natural \u2060gas and drilling deals involving companies including Exxon Mobil.<\/p>\n But she also created diplomatic waves. In her first interview with local media after arriving last November, she said China should sell its 67% stake in the port of Piraeus, which has become a cornerstone of Beijing\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative. China\u2019s ambassador to Greece, Fang Qiu, responded \u2060by accusing the \u200bUS of having \u201can outdated and a harmful mentality\u201d and \u201ca hegemonic mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n Dimitris Mantzos, foreign affairs spokesperson \u200bfor Greece\u2019s opposition PASOK party, said Guilfoyle\u2019s firing raised serious issues and unanswered questions.
