Skydance\u2019s CNN, the Financial Times, \u200bAxios and other publishers joined Google\u2019s AI news program to license their \u200ccontent for generative AI features and explore ways to drive audience engagement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The search-engine giant said on Thursday that the program, which started as a pilot last year with partners like \u200bThe Washington Post, now includes more than 400 publications globally.<\/p>\n

The deal marks \u200bCNN\u2019s first partnership since Paramount Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros \u2060Discovery, as CEO David Ellison seeks to position the combined company as \u200ba technology-driven media business.<\/p>\n

As part of these agreements, publishers will provide enhanced content rights, \u200ballowing Google to develop new AI features, while Google will pay participating news organizations for their content. Financial terms were not disclosed.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoogle\u2019s innovation with generative AI has changed how people \u200bdiscover information and content, and now those tools will help us explore new \u200bways to discover and engage audiences,\u201d said Sam Felix, CNN\u2019s senior vice president of strategic \u200cpartnerships \u2060and business development.<\/p>\n

Google said the AI features will come with clear attribution and direct links, helping readers to connect with the sources they value.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes at a time when publishers are stepping up legal efforts to prevent AI companies from \u200busing their content \u200bwithout permission to \u2060train large language models.<\/p>\n

News publishers are also grappling with declining referral traffic as search engines roll out AI-generated answers that \u200ballow users to consume information without clicking through to websites.<\/p>\n

CNN \u200bsaid the \u2060deal is in line with its strategy to protect its intellectual property, adding that it has multiple commercial partnerships and ongoing discussions with other industry players.<\/p>\n

The network \u2060operates television, \u200bstreaming and digital news services worldwide, including CNN \u200bInternational and CNN Originals, as well as a direct-to-consumer subscription service and CNN Newsource.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
