BEIJING:\u00a0 The number of people injured in a magnitude 7 earthquake that struck the southwestern region of China\u2019s Tibet \u200bhas risen to 65, local government said in \u200ca social media post on Friday, while the death count remained unchanged at 16.<\/strong><\/p>\n The quake, with an epicentre in Nagqu, a sparsely populated, high-altitude \u200bcity in northern Tibet, is the strongest to hit \u200bChina since January 2024.<\/p>\n More than 300 police officers including \u2060traffic and community police personnel were sent to the epicentre \u200bto carry out rescue and emergency relief work, the Nagqu \u200bpolice department said in a separate post on messaging app WeChat early on Friday.<\/p>\n Officers sent to the region checked for damage to homes and \u200bhelped people relocate to safer locations, the Nagqu police also \u200bsaid in the WeChat post.<\/p>\n A video the police posted, on TikTok sister app \u200cDouyin \u2060showed officers packing supplies in a truck in the dark and inspecting a building and rubble with flashlights.<\/p>\n More than 12,000 people have been safely relocated, state media outlet Xinhua reported.<\/p>\n Videos previously \u200breleased by local \u200bofficial media \u2060showed people leaving their homes and seeking shelter outside or in their cars parked on \u200bthe street. One resident reported being awakened by \u200bthe strong \u2060quake and hearing the house squeaking during the tremor.<\/p>\n The China Earthquake Networks Center said in a post that 413 aftershocks had \u2060been \u200brecorded.<\/p>\n In 2010, a magnitude 7.1 tremor \u200bstruck Yushu in neighbouring Qinghai province, killing at least 2,698 people and leaving \u200bnearly 300 people missing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
