A gunman killed one person and wounded \u200cfive others, including a 12-year-old girl, in a shooting in a Paris suburb that French President Emmanuel Macron described as a \u201cterrorist and racist\u201d attack.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWhat happened today is, I am telling you, a turning point, because it is the first \u200btime we have had a terrorist act that was planned to kill our compatriots, our \u200bchildren, based on the colour of their skin or their religion,\u201d Macron told \u2060reporters.<\/p>\n The shooting happened earlier on Friday when the gunman fired an automatic weapon at a petrol station, \u200ba medical centre and a children\u2019s playground in Trappes, on the Paris outskirts.<\/p>\n Officials said a 39-year-old suspect, \u200bwhom they named as Kevin T, had been arrested. His family surname was not given, as is common practice in such criminal inquiries in France.<\/p>\n The shooting comes at a moment of particular tension in France, after nationwide protests turned violent \u200blast Saturday and before further demonstrations this coming weekend.<\/p>\n Some far-right politicians have blamed immigration for looting and \u200bvandalism in a number of French cities on October 17.<\/p>\n Macron said the gunman had deliberately chosen not to fire \u200cupon \u2060some people due to their skin colour and appearance.<\/p>\n The anti-terrorism prosecutor\u2019s office, known as PNAT, formally opened an investigation into the shooting.<\/p>\n PNAT can take over any criminal investigation it believes meets the criteria for terrorism, including violence inspired by far-right ideas. Terrorism sentences are tougher, and counter-terrorism forces have greater investigative powers.<\/p>\n Broadcaster BFM \u200bsaid the wounded girl \u200bhad been hit eight \u2060times and was in serious condition.<\/p>\n Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh, whose parents came from Morocco, said the shooting was \u201cracist\u201d and \u201cIslamophobic.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe people targeted today could just as easily \u200bhave been my mother, my brothers or my sisters-in-law,\u201d said Rabeh.<\/p>\n Rabeh called \u200bfor a collective \u2060condemnation of rhetoric that \u201cideologically arms those capable of carrying out such acts.\u201d<\/p>\n Nicolas Dainville, the mayor of nearby La Verriere, said the suspect was \u201cof a European type.\u201d Rabeh said two of the victims were of African \u2060and North \u200bAfrican origin, respectively, and did not provide details about the \u200bbackgrounds of the other victims.<\/p>\n Video images showed the suspect\u2019s car riddled with bullets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
