{"id":92871,"date":"2026-10-25T22:10:28","date_gmt":"2026-10-25T22:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/92871"},"modified":"2026-10-25T22:10:29","modified_gmt":"2026-10-25T22:10:29","slug":"fresh-protests-in-tirana-despite-new-measures-to-curb-unrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsvog.com\/ur\/92871","title":{"rendered":"Fresh protests in Tirana, despite new measures to curb unrest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size:16px;line-height:1.6\">\n<p><strong>TIRANA: Protesters poured onto the streets of Tirana on Sunday hours after Prime Minister Edi Rama announced new \u200bmeasures to stem a wave of anti-government demonstrations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>On a \u200crainy afternoon, protesters gathered in front of the Education Ministry and then walked to Rama\u2019s office, setting on fire chairs he had placed \u200bin front of it as an invitation to a \u200bdialogue with the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Student-led demonstrations, fuelled by anger \u2060over perceived government corruption, a lack of jobs and poor \u200beducation standards, have engulfed central Tirana and spread to other \u200bcities this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Demonstrators demanding Rama\u2019s resignation have set fire to government buildings and banks, smashed shop windows and pulled up paving stones to throw \u200bat police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI believe that those who demand my resignation \u200bare mistaken if they think they can impose it through violence or \u200cany \u2060other means, but I do not believe that everything they say or demand is wrong,\u201d Rama said in a video address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The unrest, which followed months of largely peaceful summer protests against a \u200bluxury coastal \u200bdevelopment backed by \u2060US President Donald Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner, poses the biggest challenge yet to Rama, who \u200bhas governed since 2013 and won a fourth \u200bterm \u2060in office last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier on Sunday, Rama introduced new measures to curb violence including fines of 500,000 lek ($6,188) for everyone who \u2060participates \u200bin a protest that turns violent \u200beven if he or she does not commit acts of violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/arynews.tv\/fresh-protests-in-tirana-despite-new-measures-to-curb-unrest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TIRANA: Protesters poured onto the streets of Tirana on Sunday hours after Prime Minister Edi Rama announced new \u200bmeasures to stem a wave of anti-government demonstrations.
