The solar system has eight planets, and there are also several dwarf planets beyond Neptune\u2019s orbit. While the famous Planet Nine is still just a theory, astronomers have recently found a new dwarf planet candidate orbiting beyond Pluto.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The object, named 2026 ED138, was discovered with the NSF\u2013DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The discovery was announced yesterday, but Matthew Holman, a senior astrophysicist at the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, first identified it on October 13.<\/span><\/p>\n

He used code developed with Kevin Napier to analyze billions of moving-object detections and noticed that one of them was unusually large.<\/span><\/p>\n

The team then looked at observations from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and data from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) going back to 2016. Their findings show that 2026 ED138 is about 46 astronomical units from the Sun, while Pluto is about 40 AU away on average. Its diameter is estimated to be between 600 and 1,500 km (370 to 930 miles), but these numbers could change.<\/span><\/p>\n

This dwarf planet candidate was probably found only recently because it sits in a crowded part of the sky, making it hard to tell apart from the stars.<\/span><\/p>\n
