Democrat Keisha Lance \u200cBottoms won Georgia\u2019s race for governor on Tuesday, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state and delivering Democrats a victory in one of the nation\u2019s most closely divided \u200bpolitical battlegrounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The former Atlanta mayor, who will also be the first female \u200bgovernor of the state, defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson, according to US \u2060media projections.<\/p>\n

She succeeds Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who is leaving office after serving \u200btwo consecutive terms. Bottoms, 56, also previously served as a senior adviser to former President \u200bJoe Biden and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.<\/p>\n

The victory marked a new milestone for Black women in American politics, who have long been a core base within the \u200bDemocratic Party but remain underrepresented in the nation\u2019s highest elected offices. The same evening, \u200bStacey Plaskett was elected governor of the US Virgin Islands, a US territory, becoming the first \u200cBlack \u2060woman elected governor of a US jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

Bottoms\u2019 win also marks a significant shift in Georgia state politics, where Black voters have formed a central part of the Democratic coalition that helped to turn the reliably Republican state into a national battleground.<\/p>\n

Republicans had controlled \u200bthe governor\u2019s office \u200bfor more than two \u2060decades.<\/p>\n

Jackson, the billionaire founder of healthcare staffing company Jackson Healthcare, cast himself as a political outsider and campaigned on tax cuts, \u200bpublic safety and reducing government regulation.<\/p>\n

Bottoms\u2019 victory comes eight years \u200bafter fellow \u2060Democrat Stacey Abrams became the first Black woman nominated for governor by a major US political party.<\/p>\n

Abrams lost governor\u2019s races in Georgia in 2018 and 2022, but her campaigns helped \u2060to \u200bbuild a multigenerational, multiracial coalition that boosted Democratic turnout, \u200bhelped elect two Democratic US senators and delivered Georgia\u2019s electoral votes to a Democratic presidential candidate for \u200bthe first time in decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
