In a recent video interview with the YouTube channel Cheeky Pint and Stripe, Altman said it is unfortunate that ordinary people keep much of the world’s limited DRAM supply unused in their personal computers.

Altman’s comments are part of a larger debate about local artificial intelligence processing. He argued that large cloud data centers use random access memory much more efficiently than individual computers.

OpenAI chief believes that, since data centers can direct resources only to demanding computing tasks and do not run large desktop operating systems, hardware should stay in server farms to help manage the current shortage.

Technology analysts quickly noted that the artificial intelligence industry itself caused this hardware shortage. Large tech companies buy up memory components and reserve factory supplies years ahead, often without considering the impact on other consumer electronics sectors.

According to recent manufacturing data from SanDisk, artificial intelligence data centers have officially locked down 50 percent of the company’s entire memory output until the end of the decade. OpenAI alone has reportedly tied up roughly 40 percent of global RAM production through various aggressive corporate supply agreements.

This heavy corporate demand is pushing up the cost of making standard desktop parts and mobile devices. With more than 5 billion people now using smartphones, the rush for AI hardware is making everyday electronics noticeably pricier for consumers around the world.

Many consumers pushed back, saying Altman overlooked the needs of everyday computer users. Creative professionals depend on fast local memory for video editing, audio work, and design, while the global gaming community also relies on powerful hardware to run the latest software.

Public frustration over the comments quickly spread across social media. The strong negative response even led tech billionaire Elon Musk to weigh in on the controversy, saying everyday people deserve RAM too.

Source link

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has faced strong criticism after he publicly blamed everyday consumers for the current global computer memory shortage.
