LONDON: A clinical trial in England will for the first time assess whether family doctors \u200bcan use simple blood tests to help \u200cdiagnose some of the most common cancers earlier and boost patients\u2019 chances of survival.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The tests, developed by the \u200bUniversity of Birmingham, will look for signs \u200bof several cancers in a blood sample and \u2060suggest where in the body they come \u200bfrom<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    The trial is a world-first to establish whether \u200bsimple blood tests can help general practitioners (GPs) identify patients who need urgent treatment much sooner<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Cancer mortality in Britain is among \u200bthe highest across OECD countries on a \u200bper capita basis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    The trial will cover abdominal cancers including prostate, \u200covarian, \u2060bowel, pancreatic, stomach and liver, which are often diagnosed too late<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    At least 200 GP practices across England\u2019s National Health Service will participate in the trial, \u200bcovering more \u200bthan 20,000 \u2060patients<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Patients aged 45 and over who visit their GP with abdominal symptoms \u200blike persistent bloating or discomfort will be \u200bable \u2060to participate<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    The tests will use technologies including artificial intelligence and measuring proteins in the blood<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    The trial will \u2060assess \u200bhow well the tests work \u200bto support GPs\u2019 judgement before deciding whether to roll them \u200bout nationally<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/div>\n
