NEW DELHI (International Desk) – A dramatic scene unfolded inside India’s Supreme Court when an elderly man hurled a shoe at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai during court proceedings on Monday. Security personnel immediately detained the attacker.
According to Indian media, the incident occurred just as the Chief Justice began hearing the day’s first case. The man reportedly shouted slogans before throwing the shoe toward the bench.
Displaying composure, Chief Justice Gavai responded calmly, saying, “Such attacks will not affect me,” and then continued the hearing as scheduled.
Authorities later discovered that the man possessed a court entry card typically issued to lawyers and their assistants. His motive remains unclear as investigations continue.
The attack comes amid growing controversy surrounding Justice Gavai, who recently faced a wave of criticism on social media for remarks made during a hearing concerning the reconstruction of a 7-foot statue of a Hindu deity.
In that earlier case, Justice Gavai had dismissed a petition, reportedly saying, “Go and ask the deity to solve the matter himself,” a comment that sparked accusations of hurting religious sentiments.
Following backlash, the Chief Justice clarified that his words had been misrepresented online, emphasizing that he respects all religions and that his comments were taken out of context.
