Agha Siraj Durrani, senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former Speaker of the Sindh Provincial Assembly, has passed away after suffering from heart complications, his family confirmed on Tuesday.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep grief over Durrani’s death, paying tribute to his decades of political and public service. “Agha Siraj Durrani’s commitment to democracy and his lifelong service to the people of Sindh will be remembered with great respect,” President Zardari said in a statement released by the Presidency.
According to family members, Durrani had been hospitalized last month due to cardiac illness and had been under treatment since then.
Durrani was a prominent political figure in Sindh and one of the senior-most leaders of the PPP. He served multiple terms as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly and played a central role in provincial politics for over three decades.
International observers and political analysts in Pakistan described his passing as a major loss for the PPP and Sindh’s political landscape, where he was known for his strong parliamentary presence, loyalty to his party, and firm advocacy for provincial rights.
Funeral prayers and burial arrangements are expected to take place later today in Karachi, with senior political leaders from across Pakistan expected to attend.
