Three-time breast cancer survivor Hui Wai-yee has become a pillar of Hong Kong’s breast cancer support community.
Through her volunteer work with the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation (HKBCF), she provides comfort, practical help, and encouragement to other patients, earning her a place as a finalist in this year’s Spirit of Hong Kong Awards in the Community category.
The Spirit of Hong Kong Awards, co-organised by the South China Morning Post and Sino Group, recognise the city’s unsung heroes who serve their communities or inspire others through resilience and compassion.
At the HKBCF’s Support Centre, Hui is known for her kindness and ingenuity. She assists instructors in rehabilitation classes, mentors new patients and designs post-surgery recovery aids for those in need.
“Some women cry on the first day,” she said. “When I tell them I’ve gone through the same thing and they can too, they smile again.”
After developing lymphoedema following surgery, Hui began making loose cotton garments to make drainage therapy easier for patients who struggle with the condition.
