Karachi: A significant power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station—Karachi’s largest water supply source—has disrupted the city’s water distribution system, causing a shortfall of nearly 40 million gallons.
According to the spokesperson of the Water Corporation, the breakdown occurred at the K-III Pump House at Dhabeji around 9 PM last night. Officials from K-Electric have traced the issue to a cable fault, which remains unresolved even after 14 hours.
The spokesperson confirmed that two major pumps at the K-III facility shut down due to the power outage, severely affecting water supply operations. K-Electric has assured that repair work is underway and the fault will be rectified soon.
Karachi, a megacity already struggling with chronic water shortages, is now facing additional pressure as multiple neighborhoods await restoration of pumping operations. Authorities say water supply will return to normal once electricity is fully restored and pumping resumes.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of Karachi’s water infrastructure and the recurring challenges posed by power failures in Pakistan’s largest metropolitan city.
