Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Election Commission has announced that the country will hold its next general elections on February 12, 2026, alongside a national referendum on a major Democratic Reform Charter.
In a televised address, the Chief Election Commissioner said that preparations were underway to ensure a transparent and peaceful electoral process. He urged citizens to participate actively in shaping the country’s political future.
A competitive race is expected between former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami, while the Awami League, the party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been barred from contesting.
The political landscape in Bangladesh underwent a dramatic shift last year when violent student-led protests forced Sheikh Hasina to flee the country and take refuge in India. Following her departure, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed in August 2025 to stabilize the situation.
The upcoming election is seen as a crucial step toward restoring political order and strengthening democratic governance in Bangladesh.
