LAHORE: At least 20 people were killed and 1,322 others injured in 1,162 road traffic crashes across Punjab in the last 24 hours, the Emergency Services Department (ESD) reported on Sunday.
Of the injured, 575 sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospitals, while 737 with minor injuries were treated on-site by rescue medical teams, easing the burden on healthcare facilities.
Motorbikes were involved in approximately 75% of the incidents, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better lane discipline to reduce accidents.
ESD data shows that among the victims were 737 drivers, 47 underage drivers, 161 pedestrians, and 434 passengers. Lahore recorded the highest number of crashes, with 226 incidents affecting 264 people, followed by Multan with 76 crashes and 86 victims, and Faisalabad with 71 crashes and 72 victims.
Of the 1,322 victims, 1,084 were male and 248 female. In terms of age, 291 were under 18, 689 between 18 and 40, and 352 were above 40 years old.
The types of vehicles involved included 1,070 motorbikes, 82 auto-rickshaws, 176 motorcars, 27 vans, 13 passenger buses, 26 trucks, and 138 other vehicles, including slow-moving carts.
Authorities have urged motorists to follow traffic regulations carefully, noting that adherence to lane discipline and speed limits is critical to preventing further casualties.
